Every Record I Own - Day 237: Clikatat Ikatowi Orchestrated and Conducted by…

The early Gravity Records catalog was a big influence on my old band Botch. It was all noisy and frantic—notes and chords weren’t as crucial as energy and adrenaline. There was also something really refreshing about these bands operating in the hardcore world while completely eschewing all the hyper-masculine macho bullshit that festered in the more traditional old school corners of the scene. Bands like San Diego’s Clikatat Ikatowi might have been a little short on actual riffs, but there was so much velocity in their chaos that it was hard to not get swept up in it.

Orchestrated and Conducted by… is a great little record in the vein of the first two Antioch Arrow 12″s. I’ll admit that I prefer Antioch Arrow’s exaggerated take on Nation of Ulysses’ flamboyantly unhinged sound, but Clikatat benefit from the drumming prowess of Mario Rubalcaba, who keeps the band manically propelling forward where Antioch Arrow would often descend into playful abstraction. Good stuff.
